About

I am a freelance writer and photographer with more than forty years of experience working as a journalist, science writer and editor, science communications director, university instructor and advisor, and nonfiction author.

Over my many years of writing I have penned an incalculable number of news and feature articles, thousands of research stories and technical reports, thirty years’ worth of monthly columns, and a dozen books. I've also been able to write about a dizzying and diverse array of topics ranging from farming, natural resources, and rural policy to snake-handling preachers, accidental environmentalists, moon-struck umbraphiles, a one-eyed fortune teller, and a Vietnam War hero.

My most recent project, done in collaboration with three fellow writers and friends, is a new collection of essays entitled Old Enough: Southern Women Artists and Writers on Creativity and Aging (Univ. of Ga. Press, 2024). I am also celebrating becoming a "writer of a certain age" by going back to school to pursue an MFA in Nature Writing from Western Colorado University.
